Total Reports of Annual Income Tax Return in 2020 Dropped By 9.4%

JAKARTA. The number of Annual Income Tax (PPh) tax return (SPT) for the 2019 tax year, until maturity of 30 April, 2020, is lower than last year. Based on data from the Directorate General of Taxes (DGT), the number of Annual Income Tax Returns that were reported mandatory per 1 May, 2020 was recorded as only 10.98 million tax returns, or decreased by 9.4% from last year which was recorded at 12.19 million tax returns.

The decline occurred in a number of channels for submission of annual income tax returns, both submission by the manual method, e-SPT, and e-Filing. However, tax return submission in other channels has increased, such as submission via e-filing provided by the Application Service Provider (ASP) and e-Form.

Likewise, if it is seen based on the type of income tax return reported, it has generally decreased. For example, the types of income tax return (SPT) form 1770 or tax report submitted by individuals with income from their own businesses recorded as much as 1.04 million reports down from last year which reached 1.29 million reports.

While the number of tax reports submitted by employees with an income of IDR 60 million a year or more, or individual income tax return form 1770 S was recorded at 5.61 million, down from 6.17 million last year. Then for the 1770 SS tax report form, or those submitted by taxpayers with an income of over IDR 60 million a year, 3.67 million, down from 3.93 million a year ago.

Whereas the tax report submitted by the corporate taxpayer or the tax return form 1771 was 657,441 reports and for the corporate income tax return in the form of United States Dollar (USD) currency as much as 1,516 reports down from last year which was 1,578 reports.

The Effect of Covid-19

The decline in the realization of the annual income tax return submission is inseparable from the impact of the spread of the Corona Virus Disease 2019 (Covid-19). It can be seen from the policy previously issued by DGT which provides a number of relaxation to taxpayers in submitting their annual income tax returns.

Relaxation is given to corporate taxpayers as well as individual taxpayers including simplifying the document requirements needed by corporate taxpayers in reporting the annual tax return. This relaxation is given to companies that have difficulties  in preparing supporting documents such as financial statements, due to the impact of the Covid-19.

As for individual taxpayers, the DGT has previously extended the deadline for the submission of tax returns which are supposed to be due on 31 March to 30 April, 2020.
