Working in the Disruption Era, Just One Skill Is Not Enough!

The future of the workplace is demanding that we continuously develop our capacities, ever more so with the ongoing Revolution 5.0, which emphasizes collaboration between humans and technology across various industrial sectors. This situation requires every worker to constantly reskill and upskill to stay relevant and empowered in their jobs. Actual skills are crucial for workers to adapt during the ever-changing wave of disruption, making having them an advantage for anyone living in this era.

According to research by the McKinsey Global Institute, more than 350 million workers worldwide will need new skills by 2030 to adapt to technological advancements. The use of automation technology, which replaces hands-on work, has also been widely adopted by the manufacturing industry in Indonesia. As a result, workers are required to learn new skills such as programming, data analysis, and digital marketing if they want to stay employed.

Many training and skill improvement programs have been successfully implemented by companies in Indonesia. For example, MySkill.id’s e-learning and boot camp programs cover a variety of skills such as digital marketing, UI/UX design, human capital management, and more. These programs have been attended by numerous participants across Indonesia, equipping them with the skills and experience needed for future employment. Besides companies, the government also organizes training and skill development programs on a national scale. A significant example is the Digital Talent Scholarship initiated by the Ministry of Communication and Information, which focuses on digital skills such as big data, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity.

The collaboration between the government and companies plays a crucial role in upskilling and reskilling the workforce. The government can provide supporting infrastructure and regulations, while companies can offer training aligned with industry needs. In Indonesia, the National Professional Certification Agency (Badan Nasional Sertifikasi Profesi/BNSP) works with various industrial sectors to establish competency standards and certification for the workforce.

On the other hand, companies like Tokopedia, Gojek, and MUC Consulting have launched internal training initiatives to enhance their employees' skills. For instance, MUC Consulting offers programs such as Brevet, Kenal Ulang Bahasa Kita, General Training, division-specific training, and an internal online microlearning system. This collaboration surely allows the creation of an adaptive workforce ready to tackle challenges in the digital era, serving as a long-term internal investment that benefits companies, the government, and individuals as human capital.

The gradual yet certain advancement of digital technology presents a major challenge for the global workforce. Therefore, it is crucial for us to stay relevant by continuously learning and improving both new and existing skills.
