Government Collects IDR 8.4 Trillion in Digital Taxes This Year

JAKARTA. The Directorate General of Taxes (DGT) managed to collect tax revenue from digital business activities of IDR 8.4 trillion from January to September 2024.

The tax collected came from several digital economic activities, such as Value Added Tax on Trade Through Electronic Systems (VAT PMSE) of IDR 6.1 trillion, crypto tax of IDR 446.92 billion, Financial Technology (Fintech) tax of IDR 1.02 trillion, and tax on procurement of goods and services through the government procurement system (SIPP tax) of IDR 863.6 billion.

This tax revenue is still lower than the total realized in 2023, which amounted to IDR 9.2 trillion. Only crypto tax revenue has surpassed last year's total.

Crypto Tax and Fintech Tax

Crypto tax revenue during January-September has reached IDR 446.92 trillion. Meanwhile, throughout 2023, crypto tax revenue is only IDR 220.83 trillion.

There are two types of taxes collected from crypto transactions. First, Income Tax Article 22 on the sale of crypto assets, and second, Domestic VAT on crypto purchases made through exchanges.

Meanwhile, fintech tax revenue from January to September 2024 was recorded at IDR 1.02 trillion, lower than the 2023 total of IDR 1.1 trillion.

Taxes collected from fintech include Income Tax Article 23 on loan interest received by domestic taxpayers and permanent establishments (BUT), Income Tax Article 26 on loan interest received by foreign taxpayers, and domestic VAT on periodic payments.

PMSE VAT and SIPP Tax

Meanwhile, the realization of PMSE VAT during January-September 2024 was recorded at IDR 6.14 trillion or still lower than the realization during 2023 which amounted to IDR 6.7 trillion.

The PMSE VAT revenue comes from 168 digital companies that have been designated to collect PMSE VAT. By the end of September 2024, DGT has appointed 178 digital companies as PMSE VAT collectors.

As for the SIPP tax, IDR 868.6 billion was collected from January to September 2024, still below the 2023 realization of IDR 1.12 trillion. (ASP/KEN)
